Deputy Ward Manager

Location: Hertfordshire
Salary: Up to £50,000 per annum + excellent benefits
Hours: Full Time – 37.5 hours per week (including participation in an on-call rota and weekend working)

Are you an experienced Registered Nurse looking to take the next step into leadership? We are recruiting on behalf of a leading independent hospital for a Deputy Ward Manager to join a well-established surgical ward team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior ward nurse with strong clinical experience to develop their management skills while continuing to deliver outstanding patient care in a modern, supportive hospital environment.

The Role

Working closely with the Ward Manager, you will support the day-to-day running of a busy surgical ward, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care, patient safety and operational efficiency. You will lead by example, mentor the nursing team and help maintain a positive, patient-focused culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deputise for the Ward Manager in their absence.

  • Support the day-to-day operational management of the ward.

  • Assist with staff rostering and workforce planning.

  • Lead and support clinical governance activities, including audits and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Investigate incidents and complaints relating to the ward and implement learning outcomes.

  • Act as a patient advocate, ensuring exceptional standards of care at all times.

  • Provide hands-on clinical leadership and act as a role model for the nursing team.

  • Monitor stock levels and support effective resource management.

  • Liaise with other departments to ensure ward equipment is serviced and maintained.

  • Participate in the hospital's on-call rota and weekend service.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Registered Nurse with a valid NMC registration.

  • Immediate Life Support (ILS) certification.

  • AIMS qualification.

  • ENB 998 (or equivalent teaching/mentorship qualification).

  • Strong clinical background within an acute surgical ward environment.

  • Previous experience in a senior nursing or leadership position.

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.

  • Experience working collaboratively with consultants, multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.

  • A genuine commitment to delivering exceptional patient care.
